I just got my hands on a DEC Rainbow running CPM, (no doc of course), and am running into trouble getting the printer (LA50) to work. It seems to be overflowing its' buffer at 4800 baud...dropping it to 1200 just delays the data overrun. Does the Rainbow use XON/XOFF ??? or does it use the BUSY/OUT? What about parity ???? Can anyone help ? Thanks, Mike Romaniw Bunker Ramo ...decvax!bunker!msr

The Rainbow and the LA50 both, by default, use XON/XOF synchronization. There's a switch on the LA50 (switch SW1, position 6) that controls whether XON/XOF or Ready/Busy is used; XON/XOF is selected by having the switch in the open position (towards the front of the printer). Something else to be aware of is that a very common failure mode of the LA50 PCB is that it loses XON/XOF synchronization (I suspect the buffer full check fails). I've seen this happen on at least two different printers. You should try borrowing someone else's LA50 and see if the problem goes away. Unfortunately, DEC doesn't repair LA50's... they throw them away and sell you a new one, for just a bit less than list price. -- Larry Campbell decvax!genrad The Boston Software Works, Inc. \ 120 Fulton St. seismo!harvard!wjh12!maynard!campbell Boston MA 02109 / / ihnp4 cbosgd ARPA: campbell%maynard.uucp@harvard.arpa
