I just started reading this newsgroup so perhaps this has already been mentioned, but I'll bring it up anyway. I love the features that Vi has, but it certainly is missing a lot. Now I can have my cake and eat it too. I use GNU Emacs (version 18.50 under VMS) with a Vi emulator called Vip. While Vip does not emulate Vi exactly, it is pretty damn good. In addition, some of the unused keys and little used keys have been bound to useful Emacs functions. You get all the power of Emacs macros. And you can switch back and forth between Emacs and "Vip mode" with one keystroke (normally Ctrl-Z though of course you can change this). So now I get the best of both worlds. I would never willingly go back to plain old Vi. Vip is documented in the info tree (it has its own section). If you are a Vi user who also has some familiarity with Emacs, I suggest you take a look at Vip.
