Craig Joseph and I have co-authored a technical report entitled
Computerized Systems to Support Scholarly Writing: A Survey and
Assessment. It is available free-of-charge by sending your post
office address to me through email.

ABSTRACT

Existing computer systems to support scholarly writing are inadequate
to meet the needs of authors. This paper presents a new model of
scholarly writing, merging elements from several models of a scholar
as a composing author. The new model identifies the activities that
encompass the authoring task, arranged into three stages. The middle
stage, composition, is bracketed by stages that support activities
peripheral to the primary writing endeavor of forming a coherent
sequence out of a set of ideas, notes, figures, and so on. The
functionality of a computer system suitable to support this model of
scholarly writing is described. An assessment of the capability of
current technology to provide this functionality reveals that much
research must be done before the necessary functionality can be
supported by computers. A survey of six existing computerized writing
systems is included: Concordia, Framework II, Fullwrite, Notecards,
The Publisher and WE.

I have never had to do this before, but: please send me a copy, I can't reach
you by email. (I have just made four unsuccessful attempts at getting to
wayne-s@cis.ohio-state.edu; could you let him know I tried?)

What's the problem with Ohio State? Is this just a difficulty for British
sites or do people the other side of the pond find it just as inaccessible?
(I've tried both through UUCP and the Arpanet).
