I was thinking in particular of the C and cw commands, which 
immediately place a $ at the end of the line/word. Until you type past
the $, or hit the ESC key, What You See IS'NT What You Get.

My intent here was not to flame vi or to enter a religious war,
I just consider  it unreasonable that the only "standard" editor shipped
with most unix systems is vi.

Actually SYSV is shipped with three editors: vi/vedit, ex/edit, and ed.
