[comp.editors] Accessing vi's buffer

We are trying to develop a user interface for vi editor under X11R3
using hp-widgets on Sun 3/50.  

We have a problem inserting the contents of the vi's buffer 
into the viewing widget.  We could access only the status of 
the file, i.e  "filename" no. of lines  no. of characters.

Could anybody tell us how to access the vi buffer?

Any help in this matter will be highly appreciated.
