A need has arisen for a screen editor which can be told to only work in a portion of the entire screen. It would be nice if it at least resembled vi or emacs. What would be best would be an editor, say vi, which could be called as a subroutine and passed a curses window pointer and a command line. It would then allow the user to edit the specified file(s) and return some value depending on whether the file was modified or not and whether the edit was aborted in the end. It should be able to handle interrupts from that point, including resize interrupts, until it finished. It would be nice if it would look to see if DISPLAY was defined and if it was, it would open up a new X window for the edit (unless a command line option says not to). In this mode, it would be nice if it supported mouse-based cut and paste editing. Oh, yes. The source needs to be readily available to someone with a BSD source license. Does anything come close? Would it take much to modify vi/ex or emacs (or gnu-emacs) to do this? Is there a gnu version of vi/ex in the works?
