I know people will tell me to use emacs; I actually did give it a hard try once, but I didn't really get the feel for it, so I'm still a vi fanatic. Now, GNU makes lots of fine products, but there is no "gvi". I'd actually like to use many of the nice features of GNU emacs, but used with the vi-touch in my fingertips. Is such a thing planned, worked on by somebody, even made, or ...? Would it be possible to somehow give GNU emacs the vi-touch? Am I crazy? A reply 'no' to all is more welcome than the reply 'use emacs' :-) -- Bjorn Engsig, Domain: bengsig@oracle.nl, bengsig@oracle.com Path: uunet!mcsun!orcenl!bengsig

I doubt FSF plans a gvi. There is a VI emulator for gnuemacs called
VIP. from its info page:
VIP
***
VIP is a Vi emulating package written in Emacs Lisp. VIP implements most
Vi commands including Ex commands. It is therefore hoped that this package
will enable you to do Vi style editing under the powerful GNU Emacs
environment. This info file describes the usage of VIP assuming that you
are fairly accustomed to Vi but not so much with Emacs. Also we will
concentrate mainly on differences from Vi, especially features unique to
VIP.
It is recommended that you read nodes on survey and on customization before
you start using VIP. Other nodes may be visited as needed.

Am I crazy? All you have to do is type: "emacs" then "M-x vi-mode" and presto! You're in a vi emulation mode of emacs. Easy, ain't it? :] John Stoffel John@wpi.wpi.edu

In article <538@nlsun1.oracle.nl>, I asked about about GNU vi. I would
like to thank you all for your overwhelming and nice responses - you could
just have said RTFM, but none of you did. If I RTFM to GNU emacs it
tells me that it has two vi-emulation packages, one called 'vi' and one
called 'vip'. Everybody favors the latter.
Thanks again.
