[comp.editors] Request for full screen editor

bwebster@iastate.edu (Webster Brian D) (10/25/90)

A while back, I posted a request for a full screen editors that is easy to
learn and use. It also had to run on UNIX systems. Since that time I have
received many responses, and this is a short summary of those responses.

Many people said that I should train people in vi. The responses said
that users only need to know about a few of the commands in order to use
it. It was also pointed out that vi is available on all UNIX systems.

A few people also said that I should use emacs. It is possible to disable
unwanted commands and is easy to learn. It is also available on many UNIX
systems, as well as other systems.

I also got some responses suggesting that I look at other editors, such as
Jove, Stevie, Scame, Gnome, MicroEmacs, etc.

Two people said they wrote editors of their own, and offered to send source
code for me to look at. I looked at one of them, Thanks Adriaan de Groot.
The other editor ran on MS-DOS, and would have to be ported to UNIX.

Thank you to everyone that sent responses to my request. I appreciated
hearing from each of you.
