[comp.editors] BRIEF or Sage Editor -- Which is better ?

rthien@monu6.cc.monash.edu.au (mr rj thien) (03/20/91)

I am interested in purchasing a very good text editor. Has anyone
got any experience with editors such as "BRIEF" or "The Sage Pro-
fessional Editor". I interested in all comments!

I know that the Sage editor is rather pricey but is it worth the
money. Does it fulfill the claims associated with the advertise-
ment? Will BRIEF perform just as well anyway?

I was also wondering if anyone knew an archive site that has an
available PC Version of "CRISP" editor ( I understand it is
shareware or freeware) for Anonymous FTP. Last week, an article
indicated that it has been successfully ported to several UNIX
platforms and it was originally written for the PC machines.
SIMTEL does not have it, who does ?

In anticipation of your replies, thanks a great deal !

I posted a request for Crisp information as well. I am currently running
v1.9 under AT&T SVR3.2. Someone almost simultaneously posted a message
about a Crisp mailing list to which I sent a message. I have yet to get
a reply, and I am still very interested in getting a newer version of
this editor from somewhere. I picked version 1.9 up from a BBS in
Toronto, Canada. If anybody has any info, an FTP site, anon uucp, bbs,
anything, please reply.

I have been using Brief for about 5 years. I have to say that
it is rather robust and seems to be well-designed. It has been
around awhile and has a substantial following. Originally, the
macro language was difficult to use due to its Lisp-like syntax.
The macro language has been extended to included a C-like
syntax. The macros are compiled, which makes them execute very
fast. Even though I haven't tried, the keyboard can be
configured anyway you like. Brief is a mature software product,
which is more than I can say for some of the
	Johnny-come-latelies.

I have no experience with the Sage editor.

Good luck trying to get Crisp to compile!

Although I know nothing about Sage, Brief ended my quest for the
perfect editor - it does everything you need, and is very easy to add
macros to if you can program a bit of c.

You can get it from wuarchive.wustl.edu in
/usenet/comp.sources.misc/volume7/crisp1.9

I tried to compile it on a Silicon Graphics PI, but as yet it always
crashes before doing anything - I'd be happy to hear from anyone who's
had any successes on that front!
