[net.news.group] dead topics

chuqui@cae780.UUCP (12/29/83)

The rmgroups have gone out, the topics have died, so quit yelling! :->
Actually, I did just rmgroup a number of topics. I also saved a number of
the topics that were under discussion. Now, I plan on shutting up for a
while (I would much rather be yelling in sf-lovers, you know). I think
there are still a number of topics that could be eliminated, but I'm
smarter than you think, because I am not going to try this again (for a
while! *giggle*). I DO think that we need to set some policy down, so we
aren't randomly yelling at each other in the future...

Here is a list of what I did, and didn't do...

Dead Topics (bye, bye life! bye bye loneliness!)

net.applic
net.cse.cai
net.games.pacman
net.ucds
net.usoft.s
net.vvs
net.wobegon

Not so dead topics (and why)

net.college
Low traffic, but it does seem to serve a purpose still.
net.movies.sw
People ARE still using the thing. If traffic stops we can reconsider.
net.rec.birds
net.rec.skydive
Both of these (actually, almost all of net.rec.*) should probably be
merged back into net.rec, but I think we need to discuss this further.
net.records
I don't want to hassle a merger without LOTS of warning, but it will
    happen (I think)
net.tv.da
It is still being used. It will go away later.

I RESENT this character at cae780's assumption that he has the right to
cancel a newsgroup on MY machine. If he doesn't like a newsgroup, he can
have it turned off at the site which sends him that group. I, for one,
like net.wobegon and I am glad that Adam at rabbit recreated it. Adam has
been doing a good job keeping track of newsgroups (take a bow Adam) and I
believe I've seen him occasionally kill a newsgroup that was under-utilitized
or un-authorized (am I right?).

Also, if someone wants info about how often a newsgroup is used, they
might consider checking with the person at rlgvax who has been keeping track of
the "top 25 *" news info. I'd bet they actually keep track of every article
that is submitted (they'd have to to keep proper stats).
