You can set "tabstop" to some value larger than any number of
contiguous spaces you'd expect (like 80) so that the criteria for tab
substitution won't occur.  Note that if you do type in a tab you get 80
"spaces" displayed; also if an existing file you're editing has tabs.
I find that it usually isn't worth the risk.
