[net.micro] Help: IBMPC portable: Can I add a hard disk?

davison@bnl44.UUCP (Dan Davison) (11/17/85)

I have an IBM PC portable and am thinking about adding another disk drive.
(I at present have one floppy and a ramdisk). I'd like opinions:
Should I get a (1) 360KB drive; (2) a 1.2MB drive, or (3) a hard disk?
I've only got short slots available for a controller. Has anyone put a
hard disk in a portable? Is this dangerous? Any and all hints, suggestions,
anything would be very welcome.

Thanks in advance,

I researched this very question recently and this is what I found.
You can either go with an internal 10 or 20 MB hard disk with a short
card controller (Qubie makes one of each that are pretty good - their
old 20 MB drive was noisy, but has been fixed), or you can go with a
regular long slotted hard drive. The way you can sqeeze another long
card in the PPC is by replacing the display adapter with a short card
(like the Hercules Color Card - this works very well in the PPC).
Then again, you could add a regular second floppy drive, replace the
dispay adapter with a Herc Color Card and add that new HardCard, 10MB
*and* controller on one long card. With that configuration you would
have 2 floppies and a 10MB hard drive.

As far as the actual idea of putting a hard drive in the PPC, just
understand that they must be treated very gently from then on. Even
the Compaq can't be tossed around too much! Have fun and good luck...
