PREFACE Welcome to the INET/USENET sci.psychology news group. This group is nothing new to those of you who have INET distribution. However, to those of you (like me) with only a USENET feed, this is a new news group. The INET gateway has been opened to us courtesy of Erik Fair (fair@ucbarpa.berkeley.edu). I will see what I can do about gatewaying the BITNET psychology discussion over here in the next few weeks. For those of you who may be vote-counting nit-pickers, the final vote count (a number of late votes came in after I posted the 98 to 1 vote) was 108 YES, 1 NO. WHAT THIS NEWS GROUP IS ALL ABOUT This unmoderated news group is for the discussion of topics related to psychology. I could give a long-winded description on what I think that is. However, I think it might be easier to say that you can get a general idea for what kind of topics are considered mainstream psychological research by looking at any recent, reputable, widely-used introductory college psychology textbook. A number of topics discussed on various USENET newsgroups in the past year that would have fit nicely into this news group include: the discussion on the disease model of alcoholism, the discussion on human color vision, the discussion on I.Q., various discussions on schizophrenia, and the current discussion in sci.med on shock therapy. It seems to me that most people who have not studied psychology beyond watching "Bob Newhart Show" reruns only know about the clinical-psychopathological aspects of psychology. While that is a large and important part of psychology, I hope that this newsgroup will include discussions on other areas of psychology too. When I was taking votes for this group over the past weeks, I received a number of pieces of mail saying something like, "Well, I hope sci.psych(ology) will talk about XXX but not YYY." My feeling is that this group should not be called sci.psychology if it is only open for discussions on what I consider to be a subset of psychology. To those of you with strong feelings against seeing discussions on various topics, I can only suggest that you exercise the rn 'k' key and establish KILL files. So, again, welcome to sci.psychology. Let's start using it! I would hate to think that I spent all that time collecting votes for nothing (equity theory at work here folks :-) ...todd -- Todd Ogasawara, U. of Hawaii Faculty Development Program UUCP: {ihnp4,uunet,ucbvax,dcdwest}!ucsd!nosc!uhccux!todd ARPA: uhccux!todd@nosc.MIL BITNET: todd@uhccux INTERNET: todd@uhccux.UHCC.HAWAII.EDU
