[sci.psychology] Psychology Journals

tjhorton@ai.toronto.edu ("Timothy J. Horton") (02/28/88)

Can anyone describe the network of journals relating to psychology,
(especially the cognitive side)? I'm really quite ignorant of it all,
so just about anything might help.

And would there by chance be any (fairly) pop magazines around that
address (in substantial part) cognitive research.

Thanks very much.

I'm sure you're aware of Cognitive Science and of Behavioral and Brain
Sciences. There's also Cognition, and something called, I think, the J.
of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, and something called the J. of
Memory (no, that's not quite right, but both of the latter are published
by APA (= American Psychological Assoc., as opposed to "the APA" = The
American Philosophical Assoc.).

Psychology Today also occasionally has something cognitive, e.g., a
version of the talk Don Norman gave at SUNY Buffalo.

Here is a list of journals in AI, Cognitive Science and related
fields (relevent to Cognitive Science). If anyone can add anything
to this list, please post your suggestions or e-mail me

Get thee to thy local college library and ask where they keep the
_Psychological Abstracts_. This will get you two or three long shelves of
fat books that index every article in every psychological journal since
Gutenberg (well, almost (-: ). Unfortunately, it requires advanced
courses in statistical analysis and experimental psychology to be able to
critically read most of the articles referenced and separate wheat from
chaff. Good luck.
