On the question of instinct, which has led to a certain amount of discussion, I originally responded to a posting which denied that there was _any_ behavior which could be called instinctual. I asked what one called the behavior which seems to be "hardwired" into an organism's genes. "Hardwired" turned out to be a poor term, but for me, the question remains: are there behavior patterns coded into the genes of the "higher" animals? If so, if they're not called "instincts", what are they called?
