Research Scientist Positions Available
in Artificial Intelligence/Cognitive Science
College of Computing
Georgia Institute of Technology
Atlanta, GA 30332-0280
Between one and three research scientist (post-doctoral) positions
in Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science are available in
the College of Computing at The Georgia Institute of Technology.
Research scientists will work, along with faculty and students, on
one or a combination of the following topics:
1. Creative problem solving. Taking case-based reasoning as a
cognitive model, we explore the extensions that are necessary
to account for creative problem solving.
2. Using examples to teach trouble-shooting. Based on research
exploring interactions between teachers and students during
laboratory sessions, the aim is to explore the means by which
example problems can be used effectively to teach trouble-
shooting and to build a computer program that can act as an
example-based tutor.
3. Helping teachers teach science better. In this project, we
aim to build a case-based decision aiding tool that will help
elementary school teachers plan lessons. In addition to indexing
and adaptation issues, issues associated with science education
will be addressed.
4. Case-based design aiding. In this project, we aim to build a
case-based decision aiding tool for designers, concentrating
first on architectural design.
The AI Group in the College of Computing includes 6 faculty, 1 research
programmer, and 20 Ph.D. students. In addition to these people, the
Cognitive Science community includes psychologists, linguists, and
engineers.
Applicants are expected to hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Cognitive
Science, or Psychology, and to have significant Artificial Intelligence
and/or Cognitive Science background. Responsibilities will include both
conceptual work and computer implementation. Positions are for one to
three year periods at this time, but might be extended. Start-dates can
be as early as Jan., 1991 but no later than Sept., 1991.
Send applications, including a curriculum vita, a statement of research
interests, reprints or preprints of articles, and any other documentation
the applicant thinks appropriate, to Prof. Janet L. Kolodner, College of
