Six or seven times now I have embroiled myself in the fracas over net.music vs. net.records. It was thought (at least by me) that net.music would be for music discussion, whether on record or not, and that net.records would be for discussion of the records themselves---where to buy them, discussions of the industry/technology, care and feeding of records, non-musical records, etc. Given that 1) the limited traffic finding its way to net.records is mostly redundant to net.music, 2) discussions of the technical merits of a new recording medium--CD's--has found its way into net.audio, and 3) very little of the type of discussion I describe above as being destined for net.records seems to exist, I tend to agree that net.records may be a rather redundant newsgroup. Thus I propose the following: net.music: all discussions of music net.audio: as now, discussions about audio, with the added function of addressing some of the function that was appropriate to net.records (e.g., care and feeding of ALL recorded media (tapes, records,...)) [It already seems to address this function] This still leaves the question of non-musical records, though it rarely seems to come up. Reviews/discussions about such records (oratory, comedy) do not really belong in either newsgroup. I don't really know what to do about oratory, but I for one would like to see a "net.humor". Currently there is no forum for discussing humor (certainly not net.jokes--- NO SNIDE SIDEWAYS SMILE HERE!). Net.jokes.d is for discussion of the contents of net.jokes. So where does one discuss SCTV (which once had an ill-fated newsgroup of its own), Monty Python, Firesign Theatre, etc.? With this in mind, I propose net.humor. Comments?... (I hope we mature enough not to propose six months from now: net.humor.python, net.humor.sctv, net.humor.butnooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, net.humor.wild-and- crazy-guy...) -- Rich Rosen pyuxn!rlr
