jkrey@ISI.EDU (Joyce K. Reynolds) (09/09/89)

A new Request for Comments is now available from the Network Information
Center in the online library at NIC.DDN.MIL.

	RFC 1118:

Title: The Hitchhikers Guide to the Internet
       	Author: E. Krol
	Mailbox: Krol@UXC.CSO.UIUC.EDU
	Pages: 24
	Characters: 62,757

		pathname: RFC:RFC1118.TXT

This RFC is being distributed to members of the Internet community in
order to make available some "hints" which will allow new network
participants to understand how the direction of the Internet is set,
how to acquire online information and how to be a good Internet
neighbor. While the information discussed may not be relevant to the
research problems of the Internet, it may be interesting to a number
of researchers and implementors. No standards are defined or
specified in this memo. Distribution of this memo is unlimited.

NOTICE:

The hitchhikers guide to the Internet is a very unevenly edited
memo and contains many passages which simply seemed to its editors like
a good idea at the time. It is an indispensable companion to all those
who are keen to make sense of life in an infinitely complex and
confusing Internet, for although it cannot hope to be useful or
informative on all matters, it does make the reassuring claim that where
it is inaccurate, it is at least definitively inaccurate. In cases of
major discrepancy it is always reality that's got it wrong. And
remember, DON'T PANIC. (Apologies to Douglas Adams.)

RFCs can be obtained via FTP from NIC.DDN.MIL, with the pathname
RFC:RFCnnnn.TXT (where "nnnn" refers to the number of the RFC). Login
with FTP, username ANONYMOUS and password GUEST. The NIC also
provides an automatic mail service for those sites which cannot use
FTP. Address the request to SERVICE@NIC.DDN.MIL and in the subject
field of the message indicate the RFC number, as in "Subject:
RFC nnnn".

Requests for special distribution should be addressed to either the
author of the RFC in question, or to NIC@NIC.DDN.MIL. Unless
specifically noted otherwise on the RFC itself, all RFCs are for
unlimited distribution.

Submissions for Requests for Comments should be sent to POSTEL@ISI.EDU.

Requests to be added to or deleted from this distribution list should
be sent to RFC-REQUEST@NIC.DDN.MIL.
