A new Request for Comments is now available from the Network Information Center in the online library at NIC.DDN.MIL. Note: This is a PostScript RFC, a secondary version is available in ASCII. The secondary ASCII version may lack figures and the information encoded in typographic variation (italics, boldface, etc.). Since this information often provides esssential context, the ASCII version is at best incomplete and at worst misleading. Anyone expecting to understand this document is strongly encouraged to obtain the PostScript version. This RFC can be obtained via FTP from NIC.DDN.MIL. Using FTP, login with the FTP username ANONYMOUS and password GUEST. Use the pathname RFC:RFC1144.PS (for the secondary version use RFC:RFC1144.TXT). RFC 1144: Title: Compressing TCP/IP Headers for Low-Speed Serial Links Author: V. Jacobson Mailbox: van@helios.ee.lbl.gov PS-Pages: 45 ASCII-Pages: 49 PS-Characters: 534,729 ASCII-Characters: 120,959 pathname: RFC:RFC1144.PS This RFC is a proposed elective protocol for the Internet community and requests discussion and suggestions for improvement. It describes a method for compressing the headers of TCP/IP datagrams to improve performance over low speed serial links. The motivation, implementation and performance of the method are described. C code for a sample implementation is given for reference. Distribution of this memo is unlimited. RFCs can be obtained via FTP from NIC.DDN.MIL, with the pathname RFC:RFCnnnn.PS (where "nnnn" refers to the number of the RFC) for the PostScript version, and RFC:RFCnnnn.TXT for the secondary ASCII version. Access with FTP-username ANONYMOUS and FTP-password GUEST. The NIC also provides an automatic mail service for those sites which cannot use FTP. Address the request to SERVICE@NIC.DDN.MIL and in the subject field of the message indicate the file name, as in "Subject: SEND RFC:RFCnnnn.PS" for the PostScript version, or "Subject: SEND RFC:RFCnnnn.TXT" for the secondary ASCII version. Requests for special distribution should be addressed to either the author of the RFC in question, or to NIC@NIC.DDN.MIL. Unless specifically noted otherwise on the RFC itself, all RFCs are for unlimited distribution. Submissions for Requests for Comments should be sent to POSTEL@ISI.EDU. Requests to be added to or deleted from this distribution list should be sent to RFC-REQUEST@NIC.DDN.MIL. Joyce K. Reynolds
