The alt groups now reach about 20% of USENET. For details see the latest readership report in news.lists

Since the alt groups have been spreading quite a bit, I have reposted a checkgroups message to alt.config. People running recent versions of the news software should have no trouble with it; it will update the lines for "alt" groups in /usr/lib/news/newsgroups, leaving the rest alone. It will also prompt the news administrator to create any alt groups that do not already exist at the site, preventing alt traffic from going into the "junk" newsgroup. If your site receives this "checkgroups" message, some site is feeding you the "alt" groups. If you don't want that, ask them to shut it off. Alt is not for everyone; it's for "everyone who wants it". -- {dasys1,ncoast,well,sun,ihnp4}!hoptoad!gnu gnu@postgres.berkeley.edu Alt.all: the alternative radio of the Usenet.
