AUSTRALIAN PM HAWKE SUPPORTS QUILT PROJECT

(From Melbourne Star Observer #97 (C) 1989 OZ Media Ltd)

The Australian AIDS memorial Quilt Project has received a message of support
from the Prime Minister.

"AIDS is an international epidemic of frightening proportions," the message
reads.

"Many people have died from the disease or suffered the loss of a loved one.
But great challenges always seem to bring out the best in people.

"As scientists strive to meet the challenge of finding a cure for AIDS, others
are showing the enormous human capacity for coping with great personal
tragedies.

"AIDS memorial quilts commemorate those who have died and acknowledge the
dedication of their carers.

"Through the Names Project all who have suffered are symbolically joined and I
am pleased to add my support to this international affirmation of human
compassion and caring."

The Victorian (state) Quilt Project is holding monthly working bees at St
Mark's Church Hall, the next being on June 21 from 7.30pm. Donations of
material, sewing machines and etc can be made by phoning Sonja at VIVAIDS on
417-1466.

Commercial venues are also being asked to help support the quilt by
distributing leaflets and making donations. The Quilt Project is making
available both actual quilt panels and specially made "mini-quilts" for display
in venues as "a good way to get our message across."
