[sci.med.aids] Are Better AIDS Tests in the Works?

raburns@Sun.COM (Randy Burns) (06/20/89)

There has been quite a bit of talk of a cure for AIDS or a vaccine.
I agree that these are extremely good goals. Unfortunately, these
may be a bit far off in coming. I am interested in what research is
being done on making better and cheaper tests for AIDS. It seems to
me that good, effective tests that can be administered privately
could stop much of the spread of the disease. My understanding is
that the present tests may be unreliable for 6 months-3 years(until the
antibodies appear).

A while back, someone posted some information about a company
in California that was planning to introduce an AIDS test that could
be sold over the counter and administered at home. Does anyone know of
any other research in this area?

Thanks.
