I have just completed the Galveston AIDS Program (GAP) volunteer training. One reason for my GAP participation is the memory of my sister, a NYC artist and IV drug user who died of AIDS in 1987 (at first I had thought of trying to have some of her abstract art shown in an AIDS-related show, but finally decided that volunteering was a better way to remember her.) Also, I believe that helping will be personally meaningful. I don't know how much I will be able to help, but will try. My wife and kids support me in it, a big plus. Our GAP class of 12 was the fourth to graduate; there are now 37 volunteers currently serving the PWA's that have asked for help. We had two Irish Catholic nuns in our class, whose ways and brogues really took me back to my boyhood in the NYC schools. We were shown a true film of a PWA/HIV- gay couple living, and the PWA ultimately dieing; they had met after diagnosis, but fell in love regardless, and made it work through to the end . . . One of the nuns cried, that she might not be able to exhibit such love . . . It was a deeply moving moment. I have just called the new PWA that has been assigned to me, and am going to see him tonight. At this moment, my faith in a Higher Power -- so strong when found in AA in overcoming alcohol in 1976 -- feels puny, in the light of what my PWA is facing. I know that this will be resolved, as I get into the work; but one big help for me in finding meaning in this tragedy is the echo notes of those HIV+'s/PWA's who are coping/accepting/fighting, and especially those who are growing spiritually. Please keep sharing -- you help us all so much! -- Uucp: ...{gatech,ames,rutgers}!ncar!noao!asuvax!stjhmc!106!12!Tom.M. Internet: Tom.M.@f12.n106.z1.fidonet.org
