Excerpted from the Denver Post, 31 Jul 89 Cross-country Roller-Skater Booted from State Roads Cross-country roller-skater Don Dressel left Denver yesterday by car for Santa Fe, New Mexico, scuttling his dream of gliding across Colorado in his trek to cross the nation using his own leg power. Dressel, who as been roller-blading across the country to raise money to "fight AIDS," will continue his trip from Santa Fe after failing to convince the Colorado State Patrol that his cause was worthy of a waver from laws forbidding skaters on state highways. Dressel, 34, who started in Maryland and has skated through Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, and Kansas, was stopped in Kit Carson, Colo. and again in Limon, Colo. by the Colorado State Police. State law prohibits skating, skateboarding and skiing on state highways. Dressel has spent the last few days trying to win a concession from the State Patrol and the Governor's office so that he can continue his cross-country trip. The negotiations were fruitless. Dressel will now skate from Santa Fe to Los Angeles, then up to San Francisco, his original destination. Sigh. Anyone inclined to express their opinion can call Governor Roy Romer at (303) 866-2471 or write to his office at 136 State Capitol Bldg, Denver, 80202.
