[sci.med.aids] A question on guidelines.

Ranger.Brownie@f347.n322.z1.fidonet.org (Ranger Brownie) (10/16/89)

Firstly, let me state that I am very pleased that my system has been
allowed to carry this echo. The information that is being given is
invaluable to people in ALL walks of life.

There has been a debate on my system for a few days, and the users have
asked me to post a message for an answer to the debate:

In the general guidelines of practicing "safe sex", the act of "rimming"
(or anal-lingual contact) has been catagorized as "VERY RISKY". I have
contacted a local clinic and the information that I received does not go
along with this classification.

The information given to me was that the risk involved a microbe (?) that
is found in the anal tract and can lead to symptoms of stomach illness.
This does not sound correct to me, and the subject of AIDS transmission was
quickly brushed off by the representative that I spoke with.

Our question is three-fold: 1) What is the transmission risk of AIDS with
respect to "rimming"? 2) WHO is at risk in this activity (the passive or
active participant)? 3) What OTHER risks are involved (aside from AIDS)
if one is involved in this activity as an a) ACTIVE and b) PASSIVE partner?

Thank you in advance for the information leading to resolving this debated
issue.

P.S.: Since this system has only carried this ECHO for a short time, is
there a regular posting of "SAFE SEX GUIDELINES"? If not, is there someone
out there that has the most current listing? All of us in this debate are
strong believers that KNOWLEDGE is the best weapon in fighting this plight.
