The December 1989 issue of Reason magazine (available in large libraries,
large newsstands, or from Reason, Box 3724, Escondido, CA 92025,
619-485-9623), has an article by its Contributing Editor Thomas Szasz, a
professor of psychiatry at the SUNY Health Science Center in Syracuse, New
York. The article is titled, "Psychiatry in the Age of AIDS" and subtitled,
"The doctors see a new chance to be jailers."

Among the pages are these three boldfaced, bulleted highlights:

1. "Rather than see depression as a normal response to dying, the
psychiatrists called it a mental disorder to justify electro-shock
treatment."

2. "Exactly what sort of danger does an AIDS patient pose and to whom? Is
psychiatric quarantine the answer? Psychiatrists think so."

3. "Psychiatrists deplore the irresponsible behavior of AIDS patients, but
the story's different when it comes to the doctor's own behavior."
