                         HEALTH SYSTEM IMPAIRING CARE:

The nation's health care system is unable to adequately incorporate
scientific breakthroughs, reports the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers
Association. Concern: There is no national plan for helping the health care
system deal with the impact of the HIV epidemic. The group says the costs of
taking care of AIDS patients will cripple the system unless preventive
measures are taken now.

                        SEARCH CONTINUES FOR AIDS DRUG:

Chemists are looking for substances that will not cause the same side
effects of AZT, the only drug that has the U.S. government's approval for the
treatment of AIDS, reports Pacifichem '89. Researchers from the Veterans
Administration Medical Center and Emory University School of Medicine in
Atlanta, Ga., have identified a substance that may prove better than AZT.

                           UNSAFE SEX STILL COMMON:

High-risk sexual activities are still common among gay and bisexual men in
Los Angeles, reports a study in Archives of Internal Medicine's December
issues. Findings: Those who had unsafe sex tended to be young, Latino, had
more sexual partners and used recreatioanl drugs more often than those who
practiced safe sex.

                         LAB REPORTS OFTEN CONFUSING:

Some labs may be issuing confusing and sometimes wrong blood tests results
for the HIV virus, reports a study in the Dec. 22 issue of the Journal of the
American Medical Association. Findings: Labs sending results without
confirmation, incorrect data given about which HIV agent a person is carrying.
