A friend of mine returned from a weekly meeting of doctors who specialize in AIDS treatment with the news that the results of efficacy trials of the various PCP prophilaxis were out. He stated that Aerosol Pentam at 300 mg administered once a month resulted in a very low 20% rate of reinfection in the lungs. However, 60mg administered twice a month resulted in only a 10% rate of reinfection. The problem with aerosol pentam is that it is not a systemic treatment and they are running into pcp infections of the ears, throat, spleen and liver. Oral Bactrin seems to be the preferred method of prophilaxis however a large number of people are allergic to it. If anyone has more detailed and/or authoritative information please post it! -- Uucp: ...{gatech,ames,rutgers}!ncar!asuvax!stjhmc!135!38!Wounded.Bird Internet: Wounded.Bird@f38.n135.z1.fidonet.org
