[sci.med.aids] hiv not cause for AIDS

Joe.Bruni@stjhmc.fidonet.org (Joe Bruni) (01/21/90)

I was watching the Tony Brown Journal (a PBS broadcast) and heard an individual
by the name of Dr. Doosberg. He claimed that the HIV virus was not, in fact,
the cause for the AIDS since it (HIV) didn't really do anything in the human
body. He is a microbiologist.

He was so sure of his discovery that he was willing to inject himselft with a
strain of HIV and show that he would not contract AIDS.

His reasoning followed that since HIV was a relatively lazy virus, that it
couldn't be responicible for killing the imuno-system.

On the other hand, he claimed that the virus, in conjuction with the
behaviour/life style of the individual in question led to the breakdown of the
patient's immuno-system.

If anyone has heard of this theory, please respond.

I did not see the program in question. My comments may be thus
suspect, but I stand by them.

1) Tony Brown's Journal is a questionable source of information. Some
of his guests are knowledgeable, but many are not. Most have
political points to make which demonstrably bias their commentary and
their reliability. Mr. Brown is also known to stretch reason and
truth to make a political point.

2) While people who question established thinking often have valid
points to make, I doubt that such is true in the case of Dr.
Doosberg's claims.

3) Having a degree is not necessarily the same as having wisdom or knowledge.
Dr. Doosberg may have something here, or he may be a nut, or something
in between. Frankly, I doubt his claim, and I think focusing
attention on it may be a futile waste of effort when there are more
important things to spend time and money on.

What was Dr. Doosberg's point?
