Medical News for Week Ending June 24, 1990 Copyright 1990: USA TODAY/Gannett National Information Network --- June 20, 1990 --- SAN FRANCISCO AIDS CONFERENCE: Studies show the drug AZT can postpone AIDS and has provided hope to about 600,000 infected people, say experts at San Francisco's 6th International Conference on AIDS running through Sunday. Experts say that half of those who could benefit do not know they are infected, and many who know they are infected have no way of paying for drugs. --- June 21, 1990 --- DRUG APPEARS TO SLOW AIDS: The controversial drug Isoprinosine appears to slow the development of AIDS in people infected with the HIV virus, says a study in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine. It builds up the body's defenses against disease and seems to result in an eightfold reduction in AIDS progression for people who took the drug six months, say researchers at the University of Copenhagen. AIDS PREVENTION MUST INTENSIFY: Prevention efforts must intensify to stem increasing spread of AIDS among crack users, teen-agers and women, says a report by the National Research Council. The report also says the HIV virus increasingly infects women who have sex with intravenous drug users and those who have unsafe sex. Nearly one percent of black and Hispanic teen-age mothers are infected in New York City. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Volume 3, Number 23 June 29, 1990 +------------------------------------------------+ ! ! !
