Medical News for week ending July 1, 1990 Copyright 1990: USA TODAY/Gannett National Information Network Reproduced with Permission --- June 25, 1990 --- FEW BREAKTHROUGHS AT CONFERENCE: Improved AIDS treatments and a vaccine might be in sight by the end of the decade. But the sixth International Conference on AIDS, which ended Sunday, offered no breakthroughs for people already in advanced stages of the disease. EDITOR DENOUNCES EARLY RESULTS: Martin Delaney's early release of information on an experimental AIDS drug trichosanthin, or Compound Q, was irresponsible, without verified results, says New England Journal of Medicine editor Dr. Arnold Relman. Delaney reported "significant improvement" in all his patients. He cautioned attendees of San Francisco AIDS Conference it was too soon to conclude the drug was successful. --- June 29-July 1, 1990 --- AIDS' ETHICAL TANGLE WORSENING: Ethical problems posed by AIDS will become worse as more of the one million already infected Americans begin to show symptoms, say legal and medical experts. "There is a perception in this country that individuals infected with the HIV virus are mostly involved in deviant lifestyles and are not deserving of sympathy or of concerted action," said Rep. J. Roy Rowland, D-Ga. DRUG USERS TO GET NEEDLES: Health workers can distribute sterile needles to drug users to help cut the spread of AIDS under a new law signed by Hawaii Gov. John Waihee. Gov. Waihee considered a veto, but changed his mind. "This thing can save lives," he said. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Columns ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: AIDS Education and Adolescents by Pat Watkins Health Sciences Library University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill AIDS EDUCATION AND ADOLESCENTS A sampling of books on AIDS EDUCATION AND ADOLESCENTS AIDS AND INTRAVENOUS DRUG USE: future directions for community- based prevention research.
