Medical News for Week Ending July 5, 1990 Copyright 1990: USA TODAY/Gannett National Information Network --- July 3, 1990 --- PEDIATRIC AIDS CENTER IN N.J.: A nationwide pediatric AIDS resource center will be located in Newark, N.J., due to a $1.3 million federal grant won by the Children's Hospital there. The pediatric AIDS unit is led by Dr. James Oleske, the first U.S. physician to detect AIDS in children. --- July 5, 1990 --- SMOKING SPEEDS PROGRESS OF AIDS: Men who have the AIDS virus and smoke may be at a higher risk of developing AIDS symptoms than non-smokers, according to a study at the University of California at Berkeley. Over a 4 1/2 year study, smokers were nearly twice as likely to die or to develop a fungus common among AIDS victims.
