In yesterday's (Saturday) Guardian, a report that AZT is to be made available
to people in the UK who have HIV but have not yet developed AIDS.
Wellcome announced on Friday that the licence has been extended to
include 'high risk' HIV patients who meet set criteria. To qualify for
AZT, the HIV patient's immune system must be showing 'clear signs of
decline.'

It is expected that extra costs will be met from the 128 million pounds
given to health authorities in Englad this year for AIDS-related work.

Government figures state that there are 14,090 reported cases of HIV
infection and 1,564 AIDS patients. 1,869 people are listed as having
died of AIDS.
