Does anyone have access to AIDS statistics for areas outside of the United States (similar to the CDC's report on number of new cases reported in the US)? This would help to gain a world-wide perspective of the progress or lack of process we're making. I'm interested in areas such Africa, Carribean, Europe, and South/Central America, but any information would be great. I know that accurate or current statistics of any sort is hard to come by, but I would appreciate any reasonably reliable information. cwt@isl.stanford.edu or cwt@philabs.philips.com

I have been trying for months to find a source for HIV/AIDS statistics outside the USA. Most Western countrys (US, Canada, Britain, Australia and a lot of European countries) are keeping tabs on the numbers. The big problem is there isn't really any sort of "clearing house" outside the WHO (World Health Organization) for this information. They only publish their findings once a year - so I'd hardly call it current. The third world countries, S America, East Europe are just starting to admit that they too, have not escaped AIDS. But the methods of number gathering are haphazzard at best. Witness the situation in Poland and China. Even in Africa, where the leading concentration of AIDS cases appear, there are no exact (or reasonably close) numbers available. The best anyone can do is make educated guesses. Of course, all the statistics in the world are not going to do anyone any good until there is more international cooperation in the area of research and returning a profit is no longer the prime reason for research into this epidemic.
