I am reposting this for Scotty, root@ozdaltx.uucp due to his inability to send
mail direct to the list.

Dr. Stephen Nightengale at Parkland Hospital's AIDS clinic has been
given the OK by the FDA (same day as presented, yet) to start an
expanded use of an ocular implant for the treatment of CMV retinitus.

In the proceedure, a tiny pellet containing the drug gancyclivor is
implanted in the eye. The allows the drug to go directly to the
source in infection rather than being dispursed throught the body and
possibly causing other side effects. The procedure is painless, (the
eye ball has no nerves) and outside of minor disconfort for a day or
two afterwards, the patient won't even be aware that the implant is
there. The pellet is good for three months and a 6 month version will
probably be available before the end of the year.

CMV can steal a person's vision in a very short period of time. Watch
for "floaters" or "holes" in your normal field of vision where you see
nothing at all in spots when looking at a fixed point. Have it
checked right away.
