A person I know was just diagnosed with Bell's Palsy, an inflammation of the 7th cranial nerve, causing paralysis and possibly pain ot one side of the face. From what I've read, it seems that Bell's is "ideopathic", stress-related and acute; symptoms usually disappears by 6 months after diagnosis, with medication, although many cases show recovery without any treatment. He's a hemophiliac and HIV+; he's on AZT. The usual treatment for Bell's Palsy is corticosteroids; I understand this is not good for persons with HIV to take. Has anyone heard of other HIV+ persons getting Bell's Palsy? Can it be considered a first symptom in a heretofore clinically asymptomatic person? Why are steroids contraindicated for person with HIV? Are any other treatments available for Bell's? Thanks in advance-- --kelly --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kelly C.M-H.
