[sci.med.aids] chinese admit that aids spreads in rural areas

in an article spotted on the new york times wire service, chinese
authorities have reported that nearly 400 people in southwestern china
are infected by the AIDS virus.  this is the first official admission
that the epidemic, once blamed primarily on foreigners, is now
spreading in rural areas of the people's republic of china.

approximately 3 percent of 15,000 people tested at drug treatment
programs and venereal disease clinics in yunnan province tested
positive for the virus.
