[sci.med.aids] How valuable is UseNet/email to an AIDS support group

"Andy_SHAW%05%UMUC@UMCA1.UMD.EDU" (12/07/90)

For an AIDS support group, sci.med.AIDS could be very useful, providing
there was someone who could screen the amount of material that comes
out via the news group as to what it was. At times there has been more
information available in a week than anyone in my support group ever
wanted to read at one sitting. With a small amount of screening, as in
- these are general interest
- these are the latest statistics
- these are medical notes
- these are personal postings
etc., etc., people can read what they are interested in, and if someone
keeps a file (rolling 1 or 2 months, chuck the oldest as the newest goes
in...) then people can browse if something comes up that they want info.
on.
I used to provide the moderator of my support group with print-outs of
the medical items and she was always surprised that I had much more
current information than was available to her through her normal channels.
If I could get a higher speed printer, I'd still be doing it.

The above should be read as a slightly qualified "GO FOR IT!"
