[sci.med.aids] Sad San Francisco Milestone

jfh@netcom.COM (Jack Hamilton) (03/10/91)

According to an article in the San Francisco Examiner, the 10,000th case of
acquired immunodeficiency syndrome was recorded on Valentines's Day.

6,941 of those 10,000 have died. An estimated 20-24,000 more San
Franciscans are infected HIV, but are not yet sick (or diagnosed). San
Francisco continues to have the highest per-capita rate of AIDS of any U.S.
city, and AIDS is the third leading cause of death for men here.

Preliminary studies show that as much as 20 percent of gay San Francisco
men between 14 and 24 are infected. City epidemiologist George Lemp says
"It's possible that AIDS could become one of those persistent, endemic
diseases in San Francisco, around for decades."

Among those who died recently were Jay Roberts, who sang with me in the San
Franccisco Gay Men's Chorus, and Don Coppock, whom I knew from hikes with
the Gay and Lesbian Sierrans.
