AIDS IN THE '90S:
More than 3 million in the Western Hemisphere will be infected with the
AIDS virus by the mid-1990s, the Pan American Health Organization estimates in
a study out Monday. About 2 million in North and South America and the
Caribbean already are infected with the human immunodeficiency virus, which
causes AIDS. About 500,000 have developed AIDS, the report says.
AIDS COLLABORATION SUSPENDED:
An NIH report obtained by the Chicago Tribune alleges that French
immunologist Dr. Daniel Zagury, who has been collaborating for six years with
Dr. Robert C. Gallo of the U.S., injected 10 children in Zaire with a trial
vaccine made with samples of the AIDS virus isolated in Gallo's lab.
Collaborations were suspended Feb. 7, a government official told Reuters news
service Sunday.
