                           DEATHS FROM AIDS VACCINE:

In its Sunday, April 14 edition, the Chicago Tribune reports the death of
at least three volunteers who took part in AIDS vaccine research being
conducted by French and American scientists. The three apparently died from
the effects of vaccine that originated at the National Institutes of Health.

                            AIDS DRUG OFFERS HOPE:

Trental, a drug for treating leg pain and cramps from heart disease, may
be effective in slowing the multiplication of the AIDS virus, says a study in
the medical journal Blood. Researchers from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
say their findings also suggest that Trental, sold by Hoechst-Roussel
Pharmaceuticals Inc., could reduce fever and severe weight loss in AIDS
sufferers.

                                AIDS TREATMENT:

The drug pentamidine can prevent 60% to 70% of initial attacks of AIDS-
related pneumonia, says a study in the New England Journal of Medicine. Most
doctors already knew that periodic inhalation of pentamidine could prevent
reappearance of pneumonia, but the new study by Swiss and Italian doctors
showed the drug could avert initial attacks as well. Side effect: moderate to
severe coughing.

                            AIDS VACCINE PROGRESS:

A version of a potential AIDS vaccine has been tested in monkeys and found
to produce promising immune responses. The monkey vaccine, tested by
scientists at Harvard Medical School and Applied bioTechnology Inc., of
Cambridge, Mass., triggered production of antibodies and special white blood
cells - both of which may be needed to destroy viruses in the body. Human
tests: a year away.
