[comp.protocols.ibm] IBM and TCP/IP

PHILIP@BLEKUL13.BITNET (philip) (10/22/87)

We're planning to build an LAN-extension to our 9370-60 IBM "mini" using the
Ethernet extension provided by IBM. Our ideal LAN should support PC's
(immediately), Unix stations (near future) and Apple Mac's (if possible).
We intend to build two such networks, one local (5 to 10 stations) and one
remote (5 stations) via a 9600 baud leased line.
These two LAN's would not need to be interconnected into one virtual network.

Each workstation on the LAN's should be able to perform :
     - remote-login to the 9370 (VM/CMS, *no* SNA !)
     - file-transfer to and from the 9370 host
The PC's should also be able to run a PC-network over the same cabling for
exchanging messages and retrieving files from a PC fileserver.
Access to Email-facilities would be through our EARN/BITNET-connected 9370.

Since practical information is hard to get by we would like to put these
questions to the BIG-LAN community :
1. Does anybody have experience with the IBM (host and PC) TCP/IP product in
connection with the Ethernet board on the 9370 ?
2. Does anybody have experience with TCP/IP products for PC's vs. IBM hosts ?
3. Can a PC run both TCP/IP to the host and some other networking program
communication to the other PC's ?
4. How do we hook the remote LAN into the host, directly into the Ethernet
board or via a bridge onto the local Ethernet LAN ?

These are a lot of questions but *ANY* piece of information that might be
useful in solving our problem will be very wellcome.
