[comp.protocols.ibm] PC Network and TCP/IP question

CLIFF@CMSA.BERKELEY.EDU.UUCP (10/22/87)

Hi,
There are a number of products that connect PCs running IBM's PC Network
software over TCP/IP (ethernet) networks. There is a pair of RFCs
describing how to do this (RFCs 1001 and 1002). We run the Ungermann-Bass
product which is not yet compatible with the RFCs. Excelan also has
such a product (also not yet RFC compatible).

I believe that IBM's TCP/IP product for VM will run on 9370s and talk to
your ethernet, but we don't have a 9370 so I can't promise anything.

I don't know of any VM software that does the PC Network protocols over
TCP/IP, but I'm sure there will be some. I'm actually writing some to
allow a CMS user to print a CMS file on a PC Network 'shared' printer.
My code was delayed by local emergencies, and at this point I'll
probably wait until I can write it against RFC compatible software.

The protocol that PC Network uses is called SMB, and is fully
documented, so these things are doable if you have the programmer time.

ps I saw your question on the IBM-NETS mailing list, but not the BIG-LAN
   one.
