[comp.protocols.ibm] PC Network 1 cards/ data link level interface

STC@BROWNVM.BITNET (Steve Carmody) (01/05/88)

I'm the proud (but unhappy) owner of several hundred PC Network 1 cards.
I'm searching for a way to use these cards with programs like PC/IP. Last
spring, these older cards were functionally replaced in the sales catalog
(but not on my campus) by the PC Network II cards. The new cards
have the exact same interfaces as the Token Ring cards. They have both
the low level interfaces (ASI) and the higher level interfaces (NETBIOS).
Applications such as PC/IP seem to work fine on the PC Network II
cards. Although we haven't yet tried it on the old cards, I doubt
that PC/IP would work on those. Both IBM and the rumor mill say that
the new cards appeared because of the lack of a "good" low level
interface on the old cards.

The one ray of light in all this, tho, is that there appears to be a low
level (ie data link level) interface to the old cards. Novell is able to
push IPX through them; IBM's own Lan Support Program can push 802.2
through the old cards. However, I can't find anything in the Tech Ref for the
old card which describes anything even close to such an interface.
Can anyone point me to a description of this interface? Maybe even the
source for a program which uses it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
