[comp.protocols.ibm] VT100

jay@splut.UUCP.UUCP (01/23/88)

I know of two solutions for async emulation from IBM 3270-style terminals:

1) is a product called ANet. I have used this one a bit to call my Unix
system at home; no idea who it's from or what the hardware requirements are.
(If you know, send the info to ...!uunet!nuchat!steve [or
nuchat!steve@uunet.uu.net] - he asked me about it). It's used at NASA/JSC.
It works reasonably well as a VT-100 emulator if that's all you have, but
using it with vi is a REAL adventure. You can define the PF keys to send
anything you like, or to serve as a 'transmit' key. ENTER also works as a
TRANSMIT key, normally appending a CR. if you use it enough, though, you get
used to it.

2) is a new feature for the 3174 CRT controller. You need the Asynchronous
Emulation Adapter feature, and release 3 of the Config Support A microcode.
You can then make your 327x look like a real VT-100, including
character-at-a-time transmission, a real control key, and the numeric
keypad acts like it's supposed to. I haven't seen this one in action yet,
and probably won't for a while :-(.

Never ascribe to malice that which can adequately be explained by stupidity.
The opinions herein are shared by none of my cats, much less anyone else.
