[comp.protocols.ibm] IBM 8232

rms%acc-sb-unix.arpa@crnlvax2.BITNET (Ron Stoughton) (02/20/88)

Does anyone know what channel commands the 8232 actually executes? I have
been told by one IBMer that it implements CETI, or a subset of CETI, but I
cannot confirm this. Another source told us the 8232 was similar to CETI,
but not the same. The order number for an IBM manual which describes the
channel command set would be ideal.

It has been stated several times on various lists that the 8232 emulates a
3088. However, since CETI control units I know about return "3088" as the
device type for a Sense Identification command, I am wondering what the
connection is between 3088's and CETI protocol. Perhaps they have CETI
protocol under the hood, or perhaps I am just stupid and 3088 and CETI are
synomonous.

To be more precise, what I actually want to know is if I have a program
which supports the full CETI command set (e.g., Intel Fastpath 9750),
how far am I from being able to talk to an 8232?

The 8232 *doesn't* use CETI channel protocol. It's like a 3088,
with an input subchannel and an output subchannel.
