What is the VM Workshop?

The first VM Workshops were held in the 1970s. The Workshop became an annual
meeting in 1981. Wichita State hosted the conference from 1981-1983, Kansas
State in 1984-85, University of Kentucky in 1986, and Brigham Young
University in 1987. In recent years the annual workshops have been attended
by over 300 individuals. The purpose of the workshop is to provide a forum
for individuals and organizations with an interest in VM to exchange
information and experiences. To this end we strongly encourage attendees to
participate by making a presentation at the conference. Participants from
sites which run VM (including profit oriented and non-profit organizations
with business, research, education and service objectives), as well as
participation from vendors who provide VM utilities and applications are
welcome.

The focus of the 1988 VM Workshop will be on Connectivity. Since the
introduction of a variety of hardware ranging from microcomputers through
advanced workstations, departmental systems, and mainframes to supercomputers
it has become increasingly important to provide a means for these systems to
communicate and interact with each other and with the user, preferably using
a simple common interface. Often these networked systems include both
hardware and software from a number of different vendors. We plan to include
sessions addressing connectivity topics including:

Communications Options (eg., TCP/IP, Asynchronous, and X.25)
     Distributed Processing
     Systems Application Architecture (SAA)

Of course there will be sessions on other VM topics such as:

     VM/XA SP Experiences
     SP Release 5 Experiences
     VM System Futures
     Local Modifications and Tools

Presentations and Demonstrations

We encourage every installation represented to make at least one
presentation. The Workshop is fairly informal. We can accommodate
presentations of varying length. If you have something interesting to talk
about, but only need 15 or 30 minutes, that's fine. If you would like to
give a presentation please contact us by electronic mail
(WORKSHOP@MSU.BITNET), U.S. Mail (VM Workshop, 220 Computer Center, Michigan
State University, East Lansing, MI 48824), or telephone 517-353-1800. The
Program Coordinator will contact you for the session title, abstract, length
of talk, and audio/visual requirements. Overhead projectors will be
available for each session. In addition, we can provide flip charts, chalk
boards, slide projectors, computer projectors, microcomputers, and VCRs and
monitors, if requested by July 1, 1988.

Transportation

The Lansing Capitol City Airport is about 10 miles from the campus.
American, Delta, Northwestern, Piedmont, and United service Lansing. Midway
Airlines will also begin service to Lansing Capitol City Airport from Midway
Chicago in June, 1988. Service to Lansing by American and United is via
American Eagle and United Express from Chicago's O'Hare Airport (280 miles
from Lansing). Delta services Lansing from Cincinnati via Delta Connection
ComLink and Northwestern service is from Detroit Metropolitan Airport (80
miles from Lansing) via Northwest AirLink. Piedmont flies into Lansing
through it's Dayton, Ohio hub. Hertz, Avis, National, and Budget car rentals
are available at Lansing Capitol City Airport. Limousine and taxi service to
the Kellogg Center is available from the airport.

Amtrack also has an East Lansing depot. There is daily train service to East
Lansing through Chicago. The East Lansing depot is approximately one mile
from the Kellogg Center.

Location of the Kellogg Center

The Kellogg Center is located on the MSU campus at the corner of Harrison
Road and Michigan Avenue. (A campus map is included in the packet of
information you receive after mailing in your conference registration.) For
motorists, exit from US 127, I-496 or I-69 at Trowbridge Road. Trowbridge
Road ends at Harrison Road (about 1/2 mile). Turn left on Harrison past Shaw
Lane and Kalamazoo Street to the Kellogg Center (about 1 mile). The Kellogg
Center is located on the east side of South Harrison Road between Kalamazoo
Street and Michigan Avenue. A parking lot is adjacent just south of the
building.

Housing

On-Campus

Registration for on-campus housing will be handled by Kellogg Center staff.
To reserve housing at the Kellogg Center or in the adjacent Brody
dormitories, complete and return the enclosed Housing Reservation form by
July 1, 1988. Room rates are included on the form.

You have a choice in housing accommodations. There are a limited number of
single and double rooms available in the hotel at the Kellogg Center. There
are also singles and doubles available in the Brody dormitories located
across the street from the Kellogg Center. Accommodations in the dormitories
feature a sleeping room with twin beds, central bath facilities and free
parking. If you are planning to bring your spouse you will probably want to
reserve a room at Kellogg Center as the men's and women's dormitories are
separate. Meals will be served at the central cafeteria adjacent to the
dorms.

If your first choice of housing is not available, another room will be
confirmed. If the confirmed housing is not suitable, call (517) 355-5090 to
cancel your reservation. You may then wish to make your own reservation off
campus.

Off-Campus

If you would like to stay in a hotel off-campus you need to make your own
arrangements. For your convenience the names, telephone numbers, and
location of some local hotels in the are have been included on a separate
sheet. (Note: There are no local hotels within easy walking distance of the
Kellogg Center.)

Registration and Meals

The registration fee is $175. The registration fee includes meals.
Participants are invited to attend a performance by the MSU Circle Theater on
Wednesday night and a complimentary banquet Thursday night. Each participant
will also be given a VM Workshop t-shirt. (The registration fee does not
include costs for travel, housing, and the tools tapes.) Conference

registration desk Tuesday evening from 5:00 p.m. to midnight. A
complimentary reception for VM Workshop participants will also be held at the
Kellogg Center Tuesday evening beginning at 5:00 p.m.

To register for the 1988 VM Workshop, fill out the Conference Registration

We will be able to accommodate 300 attendees at this Workshop. Please get
your reservations in early. In the event that the workshop fills, spaces
will be secured ONLY by payment of the full registration fee. We will keep a
waiting list for those requesting to attend after the 300 paid participant
limit is reached. Those on the list will be given the opportunity to attend
as cancellations are received.

We are planning to have a non-technical program. The cost for this program
is $150. The fee includes meals, the conference banquet, MSU Circle Theater
performance, and a 1988 VM Workshop T-shirt. Outings planned as part of the
non-technical program include a trip to Dearborn, Michigan to visit the Henry
Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. Registration for the non-technical
program should be mailed by July 1, 1988.

Tools Tapes

The tools tape contains the files submitted by Workshop attendees.
Submissions range from short REXX EXECs to large software packages and
utilities. Also included on the first tape is the most recent Waterloo tape.
A second tape contains the complete machine-readable database of VM Share and
PC Share MEMO, NOTE, and PROB files. VM Share and PC Share are electronic
conferences which discuss topics of interest to users of IBM's VM operating
system and IBM's microcomputer line, respectively.

We will be making the 1988 VM Workshop tools tape. If you would like to make
a contribution to the tools tape please send the contribution(s) on a 6250
bpi tape to VM Workshop, 220 Computer Center, Michigan State University, East
Lansing, MI 48824, or bring the tape with you. Early contributions are
appreciated as there is quite a bit of work to be done in preparing the tools
tapes. Questions may be addressed to WORKSHOP@MSU.BITNET or call 517-353-
1800.

To receive a copy of the 1988 VM Workshop tools tapes each site should send
or bring two 6250 bpi 2400' tapes. We will have a limited number of blank
tapes for sale at $18.25 each. Please let us know in advance via a request
on the registration form if you will need to buy tapes. We will be making
only one set of tapes for each installation represented at the Workshop, but
please make copies for anyone interested when you get home.
