[comp.protocols.ibm] IBM 4361 and IBM 7171 protocol converter

POSTMAST@GREARN.BITNET (pantelis Tzortzakis) (05/03/88)

========================================================================
We have a IBM 4361-4 and we are interesting to attach ascii terminals
on it ??? The problem is that as far as i know we can}t attach
an ibm 7171 protocol converter. Is that true ??
 Any other idea ????
Also we a have an ethernet with a couple of VAXes on it and from the other
side we have one IBM 4361-3 and one IBM 4361-4 running VM, we are willing
to connect the IBMs on the ethernet.
The two alternatives we are thinking of are :
       1) SNA/DECNET gateway..
       2) IBM 7071?? and Flex link or TCP/IP SW
Any comments or recommendations on the above solutions are welcome.
Does any of the above solutions give us full screen support from
both sides ( IBM and VAX ).

Thank you in advance for any responce.

                   Regards,
                           Pantelis

The RT74B converter connects to the IBM as a 3274 controller and
is defined as a remote 3270 cluster. The N rs232 lines out the back side
connect at VARIOUS baud rates for EACH connection! ( 1 < N < 32 connections,
with one used for a printer port).

The ascii terminal user is given the 3270 full screen emulation with
highliting, et al! I also recall that the PFkey mapping is used defined.

Only negative asspect is the slowness of the BSC connection, and even at
9600, it still show through, ... but then that's faithfull emulation of
remote 3270 behavior, isn't it.

Why not a IBM 3174 with the Async Emulation Adapter?

Texas A&M University has an IBM 7171 connected to an IBM 4361. The
combination is working fine.
