[comp.protocols.ibm] AS/400 or System/3x and BITNET

SCOTT@BITNIC.BITNET (Scott Earley) (09/03/88)

As you might guess people are starting to ask how the new AS/400 et al
might connect to BITNET. I'll happily take any clues or plain rumors.
I searched INFONETS LOG88* here and found one entry on July 3 referring
to the AS/400 and the 5250 API use to connect PCs.

There are none in "full node" status on BITNET, EARN or NetNorth -- but
that certainly doesn't mean there's none which don't have some sort of
access. In Finland there's an AS/3000 and AS/8043 on EARN, whatever
they are.

As far as I know, there is no facility for the Bitnet (RSCS) protocols
on the AS/400. The System/3x's support RJE (Remote Job Entry) with
optional packages, and from what I understand, the RSCS protocols use
a RJE protocol called NJE (Network Job Entry) - then again, the manuals
are at work and it's a Sunday...

As far as the "AS####" machines you mention - they don't sound like an
IBM part number. Lots of machines such as DEC VAXes, Burroughs mainframes,
etc. are on the net, all using RSCS. For example, VAXes use a package
called JNET from Joiner Associates.

These are probably old NAS (or ITEL) S/370 plug-compatibles.
