I want to thank all that responded to my SNA naming convention request. All had good ideas. It is evident to me that the important thing is to establish a naming convention (this was pointed out to me in one of the responses and I would agree) and there is probably no best way for every business. For those who are interested, I have decided on "a sa bb d xx" where: a - is the controlling VTAM sa - is the controlling subarea bb - is a building code d - is the device type (printer, terminal,PC,LDEV etc.) xx - is a unique identifier 0-9 and a-z combinations (within building) My feeling is that dealing with problems on the building level will be easier on the communications between systems, operations and data communications. Also, this only ties the device to a building, providing increased flexibility for moving devices between controll units while keeping the same device name. Any other technical information like the specific controller, and Line that the LU is attached to can be ascertained by displaying the minor node to VTAM. The LIB can be specified in the controller and Line naming convention. MLT's and DFT's make mapping the LU to the Port impossible in ALL cases so I went with xx. This is no better or worse than anything I saw, only that it seems to fit our needs. Thanks alot for all your help.
